Program Overview
Medical office assistants are critical to the healthcare
industry. Physicians rely on well-trained medical office professionals
to assist them in the documentation of patient care. The medical office
assistant’s job, using the latest technology, may include transcribing
reports, composing and processing correspondence, coding diagnoses and
procedures, completing insurance forms, maintaining financial records,
making calls for physicians, making patient appointments, and other related
duties.
Purpose
The purpose of the Medical Office Assistant program is to
provide educational opportunities to individuals to obtain the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed in the areas of medical assisting.
The diploma program is intended to produce graduates who
are prepared for entry-level employment as medical office assistants.
The Medical Office Assistant program provides instruction for the development
of basic manipulative skills, including some of the latest computer equipment.
It also provides for the development of communicative skills for gaining
proficiency in the skill areas such as document production, machine transcription,
microcomputer applications, keyboarding, word processing concepts, English,
accounting essentials, and occupational information.
The Associate of Applied Science Degree program is for those
individuals who seek medical office assistant training and additional
academic preparation for advancement in the field of medical assisting.
Career Opportunities
The Medical Office Assistant program prepares students
for employment in a variety of positions in today’s medical offices.
Graduates may choose to find employment as a medical office assistant
in a physician’s office, clinic, hospital, nursing home, or corporation.
Because of the varied training, other job opportunities in office support
positions could be available.
