•Program Overview

Working with block, brick, and stone is one of the oldest professions in the world. A mason is a craftsman whose work is admired and used in several industries. The Masonry program is designed to prepare students to enter the construction field of brick and block laying. It includes hands-on experiences emphasizing topics such as the preparing and, mixing of mortar, construction practices, blueprint reading, and estimation and extensive practice of laying brick and block.

Purpose

The purpose of the Masonry program is to provide educational opportunities to individuals that will enable them to obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed in the field of masonry.

The diploma program is intended to produce graduates who are prepared for an apprenticeship in masonry. The curriculum includes blueprint reading and extensive hands-on trowel applications using various materials of brick, block, and stone.

Career Opportunities

Training in the Masonry program will prepare a student for entry-level employment in the masonry field. Currently, there is a shortage of brick masons. According to the Mason Contractor’s Association of America, an additional 55,000 masons are needed today.

Depending on the student's interests, a wide variety of masonry-related careers are available, such as a skilled mason, foreman, estimator, project manager, masonry subcontractor or general contractor, mason product sales representative, or masonry restoration expert. Students may need additional training for some of these career choices. However, knowledge of the craft will contribute to their success in all areas of the industry.
