MOA 141 Health Unit Coordination ------- 1
This course introduces students to the healthcare facility environment and procedures. Students will become acquainted with their role in the healthcare setting, including coordination of the nursing unit and health unit coordinator communication responsibilities. Other topics included are ethical and legal standards, use of reference materials, patient records and physicians’ orders. This course will also cover customer relations, telephone techniques, self-esteem, and problem-solving.

MOA 145 Medical Records Management ------- 2
This course covers numeric filing, alphabetic filing, cross referencing, color coding, records control, and computer-assisted filing.

MOA 151 Medical Document Processing ------- 3
This course is an introduction to medical typewriting and transcription of medical correspondence and records found in various medical facilities. Emphasis is placed on the formatting of basic communications, transcription of numerical figures, abbreviations, proofreading, use of reference materials, spelling, word division, plural usage, antonyms, eponyms, homonyms, speed, and accuracy.

MOA 161 Medical Terminology ------- 3
This course covers prefixes, suffixes, and roots used to compose medical terms. The student learns to spell, pronounce, define, and interpret terminology related to body structure, disease, diagnosis, and treatment. Specialty areas include radiology, pathology, pharmacology, oncology, anesthesia, respiratory, cardiology, reproductive, childcare, mental health, physical therapy, and others. Medical abbreviations are also discussed.

MOA 181 Medical Transcription Handbook
and Office Reference ------- 2
This course covers the study of a complete style manual, grammar checker, and punctuation guide-making it an ideal resource not only for transcriptionists, but for others in the field of medicine. Included are answers to questions about compound modifiers, drug dosages, anatomy eponyms, normal values, business letter formats, plurals, and medical terminology.

MOA 201 Administrative Medical Assistant ------- 3
This course covers the integration of medical office tasks into the electronic office setting. Medical topics covered are career opportunities, medical law and ethics, medical appointments, telephone techniques, medical records management, patient correspondence and billing. The course also covers meeting and travel arrangements, basic principles of management, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental communication. The role of the medical record-technician as supervisor is discussed.

MOA 210 Coding and Billing I ------- 3
This course is designed to broaden coding knowledge and enhance coding skills by addressing specific coding issues within a particular area. Module I discusses ICD-9-CM, includes an overview of diagnostic coding, and provides a preview of ICD-10; Modules II through IX are written sequentially to follow the organization of the CPT code book. Modules III through IX introduce specialty coding in anesthesia and surgery, the integumentary system, orthopedics, cardiology, OB/GYN, radiology, laboratory and pathology. The remaining modules focus on claim form instruction, billing and collection practices, and reimbursement guidelines, including the audit and appeals processes.

MOA 231 Law &Ethics for Health Occupations ----2
This course is the application of legal principles, policies, regulations and standards for the control and use of health information. Emphasis is placed upon the proper release of information for the health record and legal procedures involved in court disclosure of medical record information. Ethical codes, confidentiality, patient rights, humanistic healthcare, legal terminology, legal judgments, documents, and litigation are also discussed. Students apply this knowledge through discussion of bioethical dilemmas, conferencing, and analysis of medical-legal situations.

MOA 250 Medical Transcription I ------- 3
This course covers transcription of dictated medical material into a variety of usable medical documents. Emphasis is on using authentic forms and materials, building speed and accuracy, and proofreading and correcting errors. Students complete tapes in all specialty areas as well as ancillary departments in hospital and clinical settings emphasizing grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Prerequisite: Medical Document Processing.

MOA 251 Clinical Medical Assisting ------- 3
This course provides a thorough understanding of all clinical, diagnostic, and laboratory procedures important to today’s ambulatory care settings. Topics include medical asepsis, medical history, vital signs and measurements, physical examination, assistance with minor surgery, rehabilitation medicine, nutrition, pharmacology, specialty procedures, ECG, venipuncture, hematology, urinalysis, and microbiology.

MOA 255 Health Insurance ------- 2
This course covers a wide range of medical insurance topics, which include types of health insurance, types of coverage, claims processing, abstracting from medical records, and current issues in medical insurance. A study of ICD-9-CM coding and CPT coding are covered. The actual cases are designed to give the student a broad knowledge of different coding sections and subsections.

MOA 261 Medical Transcription II ------- 2
This course is a continuation of Medical Transcription I. Students will transcribe dictated medical material into a variety of usable medical documents. Emphasis is on using authentic forms and materials, building speed and accuracy, and proofreading and correcting errors. Students complete tapes in all specialty areas as well as the ancillary departments in hospital and clinical settings. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are emphasized.
Prerequisite: Medical Transcription I.

MOA 270 Medical Manager ------- 3
This course uses computers to cover complete medical office management including appointment scheduling, accounts receivable, insurance and billing, clinical history, diagnostic procedures, hospital rounds, information referral, standard reports, and management options.

MOA 271 Coding and Billing II ------- 3
This course is a continuation of Coding and Billing I. Students will utilize coding knowledge skills to address specific coding issues within particular areas. Modules include diagnostic and specialty coding utilizing the CPT code book. Students will also focus on claim form instructions, billing and collection practices, and reimbursement guidelines, including the audit and appeals processes.

MOA 280 Special Topics ------- 3
This course will involve an in-depth investigation of a discipline-related topic. It is intended to provide flexibility in the curricular program. Possible topics include supervision, leadership, ethics, conflict resolution, individual and group decision-making, employee recruitment, performance appraisal, effective work teams, positive discipline, and other workplace issues. All topics must be approved by the instructor.

MOA 295 Occupational Work Experience
Occupational work experiences are available to students who have completed or are registered for all required courses in the program, are in good standing, and have instructor approval. This course is designed to provide students with a purposeful occupational experience in the Medical Office Assistant field. Each internship is an individualized experience. A training plan is created for each student in conjunction with the training site to provide experience related to the skills and knowledge acquired in the program.
