Industrial Welding Technology
Course Descriptions

IWT 101 Introduction to Welding ------- 1
In this lecture course, students will learn and understand, by classroom study, welding safety, metallurgy, joint design, and welding terms used in industry today. Welding positions and types of metals will also be taught in this course.

IWT 111 Shielded Metal Arc Welding ------- 3
Within this lecture course, students will learn by classroom study activities, the machines, electrodes used, striking of the arc, running ofcontinuous beads, positions used, cast irons, carbon steels, and nonferrous metals.

IWT 121 Gas Shielded Arc Welding ------- 1
Within this lecture course, students will learn, by classroom study, the machines, filler metals, running continuous beads, positions, welding of carbon and alloy steels used for gas tungsten ARC welding and gas shielded arc welding.

IWT 131 Welding Techniques Lab I------- 5
This course is a lab course designed to give students practical work experience in oxy acetylene, shielded metal arc, and gas metal arc welding. Students will complete competency-based skills tests in these areas. Concurrent enrollment: (IWT 101) Introduction to Welding, (IWT 111) Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and (IWT 121) Gas Shielded Arc Welding.

IWT 141 Welding Techniques Lab II ------- 5
This course is a lab course and is a continuation of Welding Techniques Lab I. The course is designed to give students practical work experience in oxy acetylene, shielded metal arc, and gas metal arc welding. Students will complete competency-based skills tests in these areas. Concurrent enrollment: (IWT 101) Introduction to Welding, (IWT 111) Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and (IWT 121) Gas Shielded Arc Welding.

IWT 151 Special Welding Processes ------- 3
In this course, students will learn, by classroom study, brazing, surfacing, pipe welding, cutting operations, and production, plastic, and robotics welding.

IWT 161 Blueprint Reading ------- 3
In this course, students will learn by classroom and lab activities how to test welds, read welding symbols, and they will learn the requirements for certification of welders.

IWT 171 Welding Techniques Lab III ------- 5
This course is a lab course and is a continuation of Welding Techniques Lab II. The course is designed to give students practical work experience in oxy acetylene, shielded metal arc, gas shielded arc welding, and special welding processes. Students will complete competency-based skills tests in these areas. Concurrent enrollment in (IWT 101) Introduction to Welding, (IWT 111) Shielded Metal Arc Welding, (IWT 121) Gas Shielded Arc Welding, (IWT 151) Special Welding Processes, and (IWT 161) Blueprint Reading.

IWT 181 Welding Techniques Lab IV ------- 5
This course is a lab course and is a continuation of Welding Techniques Lab III. This course is designed to give students practical work experience in oxy acetylene, shielded metal arc, gas shielded arc welding, and special welding processes. Students will complete competency-based skills tests in these areas. Con-current enrollment: (IWT 101) Introduction to Welding, (IWT 111) Shielded Metal Arc Welding, (IWT 121) Gas Shielded Arc Welding, (IWT 151) Special Welding Processes, and (IWT 161) Blueprint Reading.

IWT 195 Occupational Work Experience
Occupational work experiences are available to students who have completed 85% of their required course hours. This is an optional course for welding students who wish to gain further “real-life” experiences at local businesses and industries and/or approved sites.
