Course Descriptions

CRT 101 Operating Systems ------- 4
This course provides instruction on the most commonly used major operating systems. Components covered will be installation, configuration, maintenance, file management, and batch files.

NET 101 Integrated Applications ------- 4
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to perform basic software applications used with microcomputers. Instruction in word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software applications will be taught. With this knowledge, students will be able to perform fundamental applications, format and print queries, and prepare reports.

CRT 111 Assembling/Disassembling ------- 2
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to assemble and disassemble a personal computer. With this basic knowledge, students can assemble and disassemble various types of personal computers.

CRT 121 Computer Hardware Architecture ------- 2
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to identify and explain various types of components. Components covered will include drives, motherboards, memory, central processing units (CPU's), and ports.

CRT 131 Computer Hardware Troubleshooting ----5
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to troubleshoot computer hardware components. Internal computer components will also be diagnosed. With the knowledge gained during this course, students will be able to troubleshoot any IBM-compatible computer system.

CRT 151 Computer System Architecture ------- 2
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to identify and understand various types of systems within the computer. Systems covered will include CPU and cache memory, buses, addresses, instruction sets, and interrupts. Instruction will include interfaces between the systems within the computer and hardware components.

CRT 161 Computer System Troubleshooting ------- 6
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to troubleshoot systems within the computer. With this knowledge, students can troubleshoot the bus system, memory and memory addressing system, computer system, timing and start, and runtime error codes.

CRT 171 Input/Output Devices ------- 5
This course is designed to examine and apply the skills, tools, and information necessary to install, set up, and troubleshoot various peripheral equipment. Instruction will cover keyboard, pointing devices, scanners, printers, modems, and CD-ROMS. With this knowledge, students can install, set up, and troubleshoot peripheral equipment, hardware, and the interface with the computer.

CRT 181 Technical Writing ------- 1
This course provides instruction on the organization and writing of technical documents including proposals, business letters, memos, and technical reports.

CRT 191 Professional Development ------- 2
This course is intended to develop skills to assist the student in growing professionally and personally. Emphasis will be placed on attendance, professional attitude, and classroom behavior. The course examines several of the major concerns of employers: problem-solving, time management, and teamwork.

NET 201 Advanced Operating Systems ------- 4
Advanced instruction on the most commonly used major operating systems. Components covered will be installation and configuration of dual boot operating systems, system file configuration and editing, system files, and system conflict resolution.
Prerequisite: Operating Systems.

NET 211 Advanced Integrated Applications ------- 4
Advanced instruction on how to use the major operating systems. This course provides students in-depth knowledge of using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Students will learn how to do desktop publishing, create/manage databases and spreadsheets, and how to create integrated presentations. The course provides instruction for simulated business problems, creating and maintaining records and inquiring, sorting, searching, and preparing reports.
Prerequisite: Integrated Applications.

NET 111 Novell Networking ------- 4
This course will cover the creation of Novell networks, which will include setting up file servers and network client computers. Client computer set up will include the major operating systems. Students will also be trained in the administration of Novell networks, including the creation of users, groups, login scripts, and using the NDS.

NET 121 Cisco Networking Academy I ------- 6
This course will teach students how to design, build, and maintain computer networks, enabling them to develop the skills they need to compete in an increasingly technology-dependent workplace. Students taking this course via the Internet must have access to a computer with appropriate software installed.

NET 151 Windows NT Networking ------- 4
This course will cover the creation of Windows NT networks, including setting up file servers and network client computers. Client computer setup will include the major operating systems. Students will also be trained in the administration of NT networks, including the creation of users and groups.

NET 161 Internet ------- 3
Students in this course will learn to use the Internet as a research and problem-solving tool. The World Wide Web, search engines, FTP, and e-mail will be covered. This course will also cover the creation and maintenance of web pages, Internet server set-up, e-mail server set-up, and server client set-up and maintenance.

NET171 Cisco Networking Academy II ------- 6
This course is an extension of (NET 121) Cisco Networking Academy I. Students will learn fundamental networking concepts and have a chance to apply their new skills in a project-based, hands-on lab setting. Students taking this course via the Internet must have access to a computer with appropriate software installed.
Prerequisite: Cisco Networking Academy I.

NET 181 Certification Prep ------- 3
This course helps prepare students for the Cisco Certified Networking Administrator (CCNA) and Novell Certified Network Administrator (CNA) exams.

NST 295 Occupational Work Experience
Occupational work experiences are available to students who have completed 85% of their required course hours. This is an optional course for computer support technology students who wish to gain further “real-life” experiences at local businesses and/or approved sites.
