Course Descriptions


CAD 101 Technical Drawing I ------- 4
This course teaches the basic concepts of drafting communication. Subjects include line types, orthographic projections, sectioning, language, auxiliary views, pictorial drawings, and scale.

CAD 111 Operating Systems ------- 4
This course provides the student with a basic understanding of computer terminology, computer operations, computer hardware and software, and basic DOS commands. An overview of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software related to the student’s primary program area will also be explored.

CAD 121 Measurements ------- 2
This course covers the basic principles of operations and scale. It stresses the order of operations. It reviews the use of decimal and fractional operations. It also teaches the use of scales and how they are read and applied.

CAD 131 Computer Graphics I ------- 5
This course provides the student with a basic understanding of computer drafting hardware and software, and basic use and application of each. In-depth exploration of drawing, editing, and coordinate input are developed.

CAD 141 Professional Practice I ------- 2
This course teaches the basic professional attitudes, actions, language, and dress codes expected by employers today. The course stresses the importance of practicing those skills on a continual basis. It also stresses the feelings of employers toward employees so that the student will be able to better satisfy their needs.

CAD 151 Technical Drawing II ------- 4
This course is a continuation of Technical Drawing I and teaches the basic concepts of drafting communication. Subjects include line types, orthographic projections, sectioning, language, auxiliary views, pictorial drawings, and scale.
Prerequisite: Technical Drawing I.

CAD 161 Word Processing ------- 3
In this course, word processing will be explored to a working knowledge including input, formatting, and printing.

CAD 171 Algebra ------- 4
This course covers the basic principles of algebra, which include symbolism, signs, equations, basic operations, proportions, and formulas. The student will learn how these principles apply to graphic communications.

CAD 181 Computer Graphics II ------- 3
This course will cover several computer areas: hardware concepts—this includes how to install hardware devices, interrupts, jumpers, switches, and troubleshooting; networking—this covers network protocol, operations, an concepts; and the Internet—this is designed to enable students to access information on the World Wide Web and find information using search engines. Students will download files, receive and send e-mail, and subscribe and unsubscribe to news groups. The use of proper etiquette will be practiced in class.

CAD 191 Professional Practice II ------- 2
This course is a continuation of Professional Practice I which teaches the basic professional attitudes, actions, language, and dress codes expected by employers today. The course stresses the importance of practicing those skills on a continual basis. CAD 201 Technical Drawing III ------- 4
This course teaches advanced concepts of drafting communication as it pertains to mechanical engineering. Subjects include line types, orthographic projections, sectioning, language, auxiliary views, pictorial drawings, and scale usage.

CAD 211 Spreadsheets ------- 3
This spreadsheet application course shows the student how to organize data, complete calculations, make decisions, graph data, and develop professional-looking worksheets. Instructions will be provided on Microsoft Windows concepts and terminology.

CAD 221 Geometry ------- 2
This course covers the principles of basic geometric construction, which include understanding lines, arcs, circles, angles, and the relationships between geometric forms. The student will learn how these principles apply to graphic construction.

CAD 231 Computer Graphics III ------- 2
This course will cover several computer areas: hardware concepts—this includes how to install hardware devices, interrupts, jumpers, switches, and troubleshooting; networking—this covers network protocol, operations, concepts; and the Internet—this is designed to enable students to access information on the World Wide Web and find information using search engines. CAD 241 Professional Practice III ------- 4
This course provides the tools to secure a job in today’s competitive labor market. Students write professional resumes, cover letters, and follow-up letters. Behavioral interviewing techniques are discussed. The course examines several of the major concerns of employers: problem-solving, time management, and teamwork.

CAD 251 Technical Drawing IV ------- 4
This course is a continuation of Technical Drawing III and teaches advanced concepts of drafting communication as it pertains to mechanical engineering. Subjects include line types, orthographic projections, sectioning, language, auxiliary views, pictorial drawings, and scale usage.
Prerequisite: Technical Drawing III.

CAD 261 Database ------- 4
This database application course shows the student how to create, store, sort, and retrieve data. Instructions will also be provided on Microsoft Windows concepts and terminology.

CAD 271 Trigonometry ------- 2
This course covers the introduction to trigonometric functions, solution of triangles, vectors, and complex numbers. Application of trig functions in the solution of triangles will be stressed.

CAD 281 Computer Graphics IV ------- 2
This course is a continuation of Computer Graphics III and covers several computer areas: hardware concepts—this includes how to install hardware devices, interrupts, jumpers, switches, and troubleshooting; networking—this covers network protocol, operations, an concepts; and the Internet—this is designed to enable students to access information on the World Wide Web and find information using search engines. CAD 295 Occupational Work Experience
Occupational work experiences are available to students who have completed 85% of their required course hours. This is an optional course for computer aided drafting students who wish to gain further “real-life” experiences at local businesses and/or approved sites.
