Course Descriptions
AUT 101 Electrical/Electronic Systems ------- 3
This course is designed for the study of automotive electrical and electronic
systems. It is a practical look at electricity and electronics. Topics
include the nature, measurement, theory, transmission, sources, and circuitry
of AC and DC currents.
AUT 111 Brakes ------- 1
The brake system course is a lecture course designed to provide students
with an understanding of how various basic brake and antilock break systems
work.
AUT 121 Auto Electricity and Electronics ------- 2
Automotive Electricity and Electronics Technology is a lecture course
that deals with the operation, diagnosis, and service of electrical and
computer systems found on today’s automobiles and light trucks.
The Electricity and Electronics course covers the field’s latest
developments.
AUT 131 Professional Development I -------

This course is intended to develop skills to assist the student in growing
professionally and personally. Emphasis will be placed on attendance,
professional attitude, and laboratory behavior for the first semester.
AUT 141 Automotive Technology Lab I -------

This course is a lab course designed to give students practical work experience
to diagnose, repair, and understand the components of electrical systems,
brake systems, engine performance and drivability. Concurrent enrollment
in (AUT 101) Electrical/Electronic Systems, (AUT 111) Brakes, and (AUT
171) Engine Performance & Drivability I is required.
AUT 151 Heating and Air Conditioning -------

This course is a lecture course designed to give students knowledge of
basic heating and air conditioning systems. The student will gain knowledge
of theory and operation as well as proper maintenance and service procedures.
A major emphasis will be on safety and correct use of air conditioning
tools.
AUT 161 Steering and Suspension -------

The suspension and steering systems course is a lecture course designed
for students to increase their knowledge of various parts of chassis work,
such as wheel alignment, wheel balancing, and suspension system operation
and repair.
AUT 171 Engine Performance & Drivability I ------2
This course is a lecture course that provides up-to-date information on
developing the skills to properly diagnose and fix drivability problems.
Coverage includes OBD I and OBD II diagnosis, as well as computerized
power-train systems.
AUT 181 Professional Development II -------

This course is a continuation of Professional Development I and is intended
to develop skills to assist the student in growing professionally and
personally. Emphasis will be placed on attendance, professional attitude,
and laboratory behavior for the second semester.
AUT 191 Automotive Technology Lab II -------

This course is a lab course designed to give students practical work experience
to diagnose, repair, and understand the components of heating and air
conditioning components, steering, suspension, and auto electricity and
electronics. Concurrent enrollment in (AUT 151) Heating and Air Conditioning,
(AUT 161), Steering and Suspension, and (AUT 121) Auto Electricity and
Electronics is required.
AUT 201 Manual Drive Trains and Axles -------

This course is a lecture course designed to give students an in-depth
study of torque delivery. Topic areas include clutches, drivelines, drive
axles, transfer case, manual transmission, and transaxles.
AUT 211 Auto Transmissions/Transaxles I -------

This course is a lecture course designed as an in-depth study of torque
delivery and planetary gear sets. Instruction areas include operation,
service, repair, and diagnosis of automatic transmissions and transaxle
functions, including electronic controls.
AUT 221 Engine Performance & Drivability II ------2
This lecture course deals with fuel injection, distributor ignition systems,
and engine emissions. All systems are covered in-depth.
AUT 231 Professional Development III -------

This course is a continuation of Professional Development II and is intended
to develop skills to assist the student in growing professionally and
personally. Emphasis will be placed on attendance, professional attitude,
and laboratory behavior for the third semester.
AUT 241 Automotive Technology Lab I -------

This course is a lab course designed to give students practical work experience
to diagnose, repair, and understand the components of manual drive trains
and axles, auto transmissions/transaxles, and engine performance and drivability.
Concurrent enrollment in (AUT 201) Manual Drive Trains and Axles, (AUT
211) Auto Transmissions/Transaxles I, and (AUT 221) Engine Performance
& Drivability II is required.
AUT 251 Engine Repair ------- 2
The engine repair course is a lecture course that begins with basic engine
diagnostics and then progresses through engine removal, tear down, short
block and cylinder head repair. Students will also study correct engine
techniques.
AUT 255 Auto Transmission/Transaxles II -------
1
This lecture course continues the study of automatic transmissions and
transaxles and their electronic control circuits, including trouble diagnosis
and service procedures.
Prerequisite: Auto Transmission/Transaxles I.
AUT 261 Auto Service Management -------

The automotive service management course is a lecture course that covers
essentials and rationale for service management. Auto service management
teaches shop safety, safety planning, and personal planning, with sections
on supervising and customer and staff relations.
AUT 271 Professional Development IV -------
1
This course is a continuation of Professional Development III and is intended
to develop skills to assist the student in growing professionally and
personally. Emphasis will be placed on attendance, professional attitude,
and laboratory behavior for the fourth semester.
AUT 281 Automotive Technology Lab IV -------
7
This course is a lab course designed to give students practical work experience
to diagnose, repair, and/or understand the components of engine repair,
auto transmission/transaxles, and auto service management. Concurrent
enrollment in (AUT 251) Engine Repair, (AUT 255) Auto Transmissions/Transaxles
II and (AUT 261) Auto Service Management is required.
AUT 291 Service Management Practicum -------

This course offers students detailed analysis of service department management
practices. Service management practicum is designed to teach students
the service representative’s relationship to the service department
operation. Actual field experiences are involved.
AUT 295 Occupational Work Experience
Occupational work experiences are available to students who have completed
85% of their required course hours. This is an optional course for automotive
technology students who wish to gain further “real-life” experiences
at local businesses and/or approved sites.
