Applying for
Financial Assistance
To be eligible to apply for federal aid, you:
· must be a high school graduate or have a GED;
· must be a United States citizen or eligible
non-citizen;
· must be registered with Selective Service,
if required to
do so, and must be enrolled
in an eligible
program; and cannot be in
default on a federal
educational
loan or owe a repayment
on a federal grant.
In addition:
· federal student loans must be repaid;
· financial aid will be used to pay tuition and
fees first;
· all federal financial aid is disbursed by
the enrollment
period for that program;
· and all disbursements are dependent
on satisfactory
progress.

Seven Steps to NEKTC
Financial Aid
As your high school graduation quickly
approaches, applying to college can become a stressful process. To better
help you make the transition from high school to Northeast Kansas Technical
College, we have created this checklist that will help you keep track
of what is completed and remind you of what steps are left in the financial
aid process.
1. Gather information needed to properly fill out the FAFSA (Free Application
for Federal Student Aid) form.
* The prior year’s tax return. For example, to apply for Financial
Aid for the 2003-2004 school year, you will need your 2002 tax return,
including W-2 forms.
2. Acquire a copy of the current year’s
FAFSA form. This can be obtained several ways:
* Visit your local library and request a copy.
* Check with your high school counselor for a form.
* Call the Northeast Kansas Technical College Financial Aid office and
request that a FAFSA form be mailed to you.
3. Properly fill out and complete the required
sections of the paper FAFSA form.
* Carefully read and answer each question on the FAFSA form to avoid any
delays in processing your application.
* When you have completed the FAFSA form, return it to the Financial Aid
office at Northeast Kansas Technical College.
4. If you have access to the Internet, you
can visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov for an opportunity to fill out an online
version of the FAFSA form.
5. If the Financial Aid office notifies you
that you have been selected for verification;
* Promptly turn in all tax forms, including W-2’s to the Financial
Aid office
* Make certain that the requested copies are signed.
* Complete and fill out both sides of the verification worksheet.
6. When you have received your Financial Aid
award letter, return a signed and dated copy to the Financial Aid office
at NEKTC.
7. Contact the Financial Aid office at Northeast Kansas Technical College
for details regarding the Financial Aid process.
